Three Important Elements of Professional Photography

What is a Photograph?

The Greek word ‘photos,’ meaning light, is the origin of the word ‘photograph’. Graphe is the Greek term ‘graphe’ for drawing. Photograph is a drawing made with light. Understanding what light is, and how to control it, is essential to taking a photograph. ISO, shutter speed and aperture are elements that determine how much light and for how long you accept the light. However, the only thing they do is control the light. Let’s examine how each element will impact the image.

ISO Darkening or Lighting the Picture

The picture becomes darker when the ISO number is low. The picture will be brighter when the ISO number is higher. When ISO is low, the picture will be darker. But that’s not all! ISO with a higher value means that the image will have more noise. You should keep ISO at the lowest level possible if you want a picture that is clear and noiseless. This is a way to artificially lighten the image when there is not enough light.

How long do you want to open the shutter box?

If the shutter speed falls below 1/125 sec, it is called fast. If the shutter speed, for example, is 1/125 seconds, I would want to open the box of the shutter 1/125 seconds. The shutter box can accept more light if we open it longer. The picture will be taken at a lighter level. But that’s not all! The picture will be more fluid if the shutter is open longer. Let’s say you want to take pictures of F1 racing cars. You can capture the car in the same way as the stop-image if you use the faster shutter speed. Set the shutter speed slower to capture a picture where you can feel the motion of the car.

Aperture: How much light do you want?

We call the act of tightening the aperture, lowering the number of apertures. We can get more light when we lower the number apertures. But that’s not all! The depth of field is controlled by the aperture. It makes them out of focus. Derek Boyd, a photographer from the UK, said: “As a beginner, if you’re looking to highlight something, a shallow depth of focus is the best way to do it.”3 By opening the aperture you can create an image that’s out of focus. Close the aperture and you’ll get a pen-focused photo.

There is no perfect photo. You can use your photography to express yourself if you know how to control these three elements. You can use a DSLR, Mirrorless or smartphone if they are controlled properly. We can help you get professional photos for your business. Do not hesitate to contact us! Your commercial will be improved by our team.
